Background
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made an announcement on Saturday that the country will have its first locally produced chip on the market by the end of 2025. He added that the government is also working swiftly to develop a ‘Made in India’ 6G network, marking a major step toward self-reliance in advanced technology.
Speaking at the Economic Times World Leaders Forum, Modi acknowledged that India had the chance to begin semiconductor manufacturing 50–60 years ago but lost the opportunity for decades. He said the present government has reversed this situation, with new semiconductor plants being established across the country.
We are developing Made in India 6G at a rapid pace. India has commenced building semiconductor-related factories. Modi stated, the first Made in India chip will be rolled out into the market by the end of the year.
The Prime Minister also underlined India’s ambition to become a global hub for electric vehicles (EVs), announcing plans to export EVs to more than 100 countries. He said this aligns with the nation’s broader push for clean energy and sustainable industries.
Highlighting India’s reform-driven growth, Modi said the government is committed to transforming governance and economic systems. He pointed to the new Income Tax Bill, introduced after 60 years, written in simple language to make compliance easier for the common citizen.
India, which believes in the mantra of Reform, Perform, Transform, is today in a position to take the world out of slow growth, Modi said and added that India was not a country which will sit idle but will convert progress in momentum.
Officials said these reforms, combined with the upcoming semiconductor industry and 6G development, will strengthen India’s role in the global technology and economic landscape.
