Background
Flipkart, a leading e-commerce company, announced the creation of more than 2.2 lakh seasonal jobs to cater to the increased demand during the upcoming festive season. The jobs will be distributed across the supply chain, logistics, and last-mile delivery, according to a company statement.
In order to facilitate its Big Billion Days sale, Flipkart is also in the process of ramping up its infrastructure and technological deployment across 28 states. The company stated that this expansion will not only help serve customers during peak demand but also create large-scale employment opportunities nationwide.
A significant part of this hiring drive is aimed at strengthening Flipkart’s logistics network. The company will add 650 new delivery hubs dedicated to the festive period, particularly in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. Flipkart noted that its “ecosystem-first approach” is designed to handle massive scale during the shopping festival, while also promoting inclusive hiring.
This year, women’s participation in the seasonal workforce has seen a 10 percent rise, the company said. Flipkart has also outlined plans to increase employment opportunities for persons with disabilities (PWDs), underscoring its focus on building a diverse and inclusive workplace.
Its announcement follows a general trend of increased hiring in other parts of e-commerce. Amazon India previously said that it had created more than 1.5 lakh temporary job opportunities before the festive season. These jobs were allocated into fulfillment centers, sortation hubs, and final-mile places. Amazon also showed that thousands of women and more than 2000 PWDs were hired during this festive hiring.
As Flipkart and Amazon spend large sums of money on seasonal hiring, the online retailer industry will experience one of the biggest hires during the festive season, providing employment opportunities in urban and semi-urban areas of India.
