Background
E-commerce platform Meesho has announced that it has created nearly 12 lakh seasonal job opportunities ahead of the festive shopping season in India, with almost 40 percent more job opportunities created this year compared to last year. The company reported that more than 70 percent of these opportunities will emerge in tier-3 and tier-4 cities, as a result of the expanding contributions of smaller markets to the online retail business in India.
Meesho sellers have employed approximately 5.5 lakh seasonal employees to cope with the rush during the festivities. These employees are being trained on how to sort and package, as well as perform simple manufacturing tasks. Together with the growth of the workforce, sellers are gearing up with hand-picked festive collections, novel product categories, and stock audits to meet increased demand.
The biggest push this year has come from the logistics sector. Meesho, working with third-party logistics partners as well as its own logistics arm Valmo, has facilitated the creation of 6.7 lakh seasonal jobs in delivery and operations. This represents a 90% jump from last year. The jobs span first-mile, middle-mile, and last-mile delivery roles, including picking, loading, unloading, and handling product returns.
It is the festival season when many Indian families use e-commerce. To maintain seamless operations, we have created more than 12 lakh opportunities, and a significant portion of that has come from tier-3 cities, said Sourabh Pandey, CXO, Fulfilment and Experience, at Meesho.
Online retailers in India work hard during the festive quarter because a significant portion of their yearly sales is generated by selling electronics, apparel, home decor, and festive items. The seasonal employment surge by Meesho will likely help sellers and logistics partners manage the influx of orders and expand the platform to smaller cities.
