  • The operation ignited a fresh spate of cyber attacks, putting India’s cyber infrastructure on high alert.

Key Facts

  • The Pahalgam terror attack killed 26 people, including Indian and Nepali citizens.
  • The Indian government has since embarked on advanced cybersecurity measures to tackle heightened cyber warfare.

Key Background

A massive terror strike on Pahalgam of civilians, largely pilgrims, brought a fierce counter-attack from India. The terror strike, blamed on Pakistan-sponsored terror group The Resistance Front (TRF), resulted in numerous fatalities and global condemnation across the nation. The government, feeling increasing public and security pressure, launched a targeted military counter-attack, code-named Operation Sindoor.

Operation Sindoor was a military action to dislocate terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Nine terror camps of infamous groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed were targeted by Indian forces in a precision strike. The camps were said to be planning to strike Indian targets in the future. Operation Sindoor was strategically successful as it achieved what was targeted without harming civilians.

Following the attack, India’s cyber space also witnessed an outburst of cyber attacks. A sequence of coordinated cyber attacks was aimed at a number of government sites, public sites, and important service networks. The activities involved attempts at site defacement, phishing campaigns, and interference in financial and administrative services. Indian agencies responded by sending nationwide cybersecurity alerts, subjecting all important infrastructure to stepped-up surveillance.

The Indian Cyber Force (ICF) has further also reported deep defensive and offensive cyber operations. Counter-cyber operations have been initiated to monitor and disrupt the adversary’s cyber attacks by Pakistani hacker communities. A few intrusions into Pakistani institutional networks were also established as a means of cyber retribution. With the growing intersection of conventional war and cyber warfare, India’s security apparatus now operates in a state of higher alertness so as not to destabilize any further.

This evolving situation suggests the new age of war—where the warcraft on the borders is supplemented by cyber war, and the resistance on the net is as vital as the traditional defense. Now the battle is directed towards the defense of India’s sovereignty on the net in the aftermath of rising cross-border tensions.
