Key Background:
MG Motor unveiled its ambitious new electric SUV concept, the Cyber X, at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show as its second foray into the brand’s Cyber series after the Cyberster EV roadster. Aimed at younger, fashion-conscious buyers, the Cyber X combines retro design elements with next-generation electric vehicle (EV) technology to appeal to a new breed of city explorers.
Measuring about 4.3 meters in length, the Cyber X is a sub-compact SUV and belongs to the same category as the Land Rover Defender 90 and the soon-to-be-released Tata Sierra EV. It differs, however, from traditional off-roaders as it focuses on “city adventure,” marrying rugged looks with urban usability. Its style features aggressive, box-like lines, a flat-black body, pop-up headlamps with a nostalgic flavor of 90s sports cars, and an updated LED light bar across the front grille.
MG’s parent company, SAIC Motor, built the all-electric platform upon which the Cyber X is based. The SUV boasts a cell-to-body battery arrangement, a method that increases structural strength and utilization of space. Though performance numbers have not been released, MG was quick to indicate that the car is meant to be emotionally stimulating but also usable by families.
The design direction of Jozef Kaban, previously at Volkswagen and Rolls-Royce, adds further weight to Cyber X’s unique styling. His idea with Cyber X is to demonstrate design range in MG and offer a wide contrast to the more sleek Cyberster.
Another significant aspect is MG’s partnership with smartphone giant Oppo, which hints that the car’s interior will be heavily integrated with digital technology, providing premium infotainment and connectivity features.
While still a concept, MG hinted at speedy evolution prospects courtesy of China’s rapidly advancing car manufacturing environment. The Cyber X may soon be a reality, considering MG’s plans to increase its EV lineup worldwide with eight new models by 2026.
If introduced to India, the Cyber X would compete with the Tata Sierra EV and delight buyers with a statement, tech-infused lifestyle SUV replete with futuristic temperament.
